Hugh Freeze brings some of his former Liberty staffers to Auburn.
The 33-year-old Aldridge has been coaching at the college level since 2013 and has four years of experience at the FBS level, all of them coming at Liberty as part of Freeze’s staff in Lynchburg, Va. He got his start as a graduate assistant at FCS Lindenwood in 2013 before making the move to Division II Ouachita Baptist that same year as defensive line coach.
In 2019, Freeze plucked Aldridge from the Division II ranks and hired him to be Liberty’s defensive line coach. He served in that role for three seasons before taking over the linebacker room and adding defensive coordinator duties this season. Aldridge also served as the Flames’ interim head coach after Freeze took the Auburn job late last month. Liberty lost its bowl game Tuesday to Toledo in Aldridge’s only game as interim coach.
Under his watch this season, Liberty’s defense finished 54th nationally in points allowed, giving up 24.6 points per game. The Flames were 23rd nationally in fewest yards allowed per play, limiting opponents to 4.96 yards per snap this season. They also tied for 10th nationally in turnovers forced, with 24 .
