Attorney General Barr declines to testify before House panel Thursday, says Judiciary Committee aide
By Rachael Bade Rachael Bade Congressional reporter Email Bio Follow May 1 at 5:43 PM BREAKING: Barr has been in a dispute with the committee over its plans to have a counsel question the top law enforcement offical alongside lawmakers on the panel at Thursday’s hearing. This story will update.
Lawmakers and officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to freely discuss private deliberations, cautioned that no final decision has been made. Barr has until the end of the day to hand over the full Mueller report but is not expected to comply. The discussions about contempt for Barr follows the disclosure that Mueller challenged the attorney general’s handling of the report on Russia interference in the 2016 election. The news reverberated in the House, with Democrats accusing Barr of perjuring himself in testimony to Congress.
House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer told reporters Wednesday that Barr’s handling of the Mueller report is a “very serious matter” and that it appeared he made untrue statements to Congress. In light of Mueller’s concerns about Barr’s summary of the report and his expected refusal to turn over the full report, the House panel might push for contempt of Barr even if he shows up Thursday.
“It appears that the attorney general may have perjured himself and given false testimony to Congress and he may be well advised to resign and seek legal counsel,” said Rep. Hank Johnson , another Judiciary member.
