A young student talks on the phone, waiting to be picked up by parents during dismissal at Carvajal Elementary School on Sept. 1. The school modified its safety protocols to keep children inside while they wait for parents.Shortly before 3 p.m. on a recent Thursday afternoon, Principal Hugo Saucedo started preparing Carvajal Elementary School for a bit of organized chaos.
“The reality is, we can have safety, or we can have convenience. We cannot necessarily have both,” Saucedo said. “The pandemic was a challenge, staffing issues were a challenge, but for me personally as a principal, the Uvalde tragedy, oh my gosh, you want to talk about a gut punch,” Saucedo said. “I think about that every single day, and it informs everything I do at this campus in terms of making sure my community is safe.”
“In the beginning, parents didn’t like it because it took a little long, it took us about an hour,” Saucedo said. “But we’ve cut that down to about 30 minutes now… Today we actually finished in about 20 minutes, so I was amazed.”The summer after Uvalde, most San Antonio area school districts sent out more work orders than usual, because safety partly depends on mechanisms and infrastructure.

The school modified its safety protocols to keep children inside while they wait for parents.“We can have the best plan. We can have the best processes… but if we don’t teach it to our kids and model it for them, it’s going to fall apart,” Saucedo said.
