The ATM Sailing Team from Malaysia won the Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award at the Royal Langkawi International Regatta (RLIR) 2025 for their heroic rescue of sailors from the capsized Australian yacht Boreas.
The ATM Sailing Team from Malaysia displayed commendable sportsmanship during the Royal Langkawi International Regatta ( RLIR ) 2025, earning them the prestigious Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award. Competing in the Racing class with their yacht Uranus, the team encountered an emergency situation on the fourth day of the regatta. Around 11 am, they noticed the Australian yacht Boreas capsized.
Without hesitation, the ATM Sailing Team captain, Hasani Izhar, and his crew decided to abandon their own race and prioritize rescuing the distressed sailors. Upon reaching the capsized Boreas, the ATM Sailing Team provided immediate first aid to a crew member suffering from a shoulder injury. They safely transferred five other crew members and their belongings onto their yacht, Uranus. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, they promptly contacted the Marine Police, requesting emergency assistance and salvage efforts for the overturned yacht. Hasani Izhar shared that his team worked tirelessly to stabilize the capsized yacht, actively assisting the Boreas crew in pumping out water from 4 pm until 8 pm. While competing for points in the race, the ATM Sailing Team prioritized the safety and well-being of the sailors involved. They learned that this marked the first instance of a yacht capsizing during the RLIR's history. Despite not securing a victory in the Racing class, the team felt deeply honored and proud to receive the Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award. This recognition marked their first such accolade since participating in RLIR in 2006. A crew member of Boreas, Karen Rowlands (72), competing in the Multihull class, sustained injuries to her head, right shoulder, and right thigh and was transported to Sultanah Maliha Hospital, Langkawi, for further medical attention. The Tunku Abdullah Sportsmanship Award is presented to individuals or teams who exemplify exceptional sportsmanship, both on and off the water, throughout the RLIR. The winner is selected based on the highest number of votes cast by participating race competitors
