’s centennial season rolls to a close, their penultimate concert series kicked off on Thursday at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center. The main attraction of the program promised to be the world premiere of a new piece, specifically commissioned by the NJS and its Music Director Xian Zhang for the orchestra’s 100th birthday. But it was another debut later in the concert that stole the spotlight.
This is not to say that Chen Yi’s “Landscape Impression,” didn’t make an impression. The composer was in the theater and spoke beforehand about how pleased she was with how the New Jersey players rehearsed the piece the day before. Indeed the eight-minute work plays to the orchestra’s strengths: flowing melodies, lush writing for the strings, fun woodwind frolics, and long harp glissandos for harpist Stacy Shames to pluck.
