At least 33 people were killed and 15 injured in riots at a prison in Maputo, Mozambique, yesterday. Police Chief Bernardino Rafael said that 1,534 inmates escaped during the incident, but 150 have been recaptured. The riots come amid escalating public tensions in Mozambique following a controversial election in October, which saw the ruling Frelimo party win, but with allegations of fraud by the opposition. While Rafael claimed protests outside the prison sparked the riots, Justice Minister Helena Kida told private broadcaster Miramar TV that the incident started inside the prison and was not linked to demonstrations.
