Tyrone Phillips, a Skokie native, is directing the Shakespeare romantic comedy 'Twelfth Night' at Chicago Shakespeare Theater Oct. 25-Nov. 26.
Director Tyrone Phillips, a Skokie native, acknowledged that he has never before seen a production of “Twelfth Night.” The Niles North High School alum thinks that’s working to his advantage as he’s directing the Shakespeare comedy at Chicago Shakespeare Theater. “I don’t feel any pressure to live up to something. We’re planning a magical world that’s never been explored before,” he said of the production, which runs Oct. 25-Nov. 26.
Phillips has a history with Chicago Shakespeare Theater, where he assistant-directed two shows, starting with “Red Velvet,” directed by Gary Griffin, in 2017. He also assistant-directed a production of “Hamlet,” which was directed by Barbara Gaines, in 2019. The director credits seeing a production at Chicago Shakespeare Theater during a field trip when he was a student at Niles North High School as being one of the reasons he chose a career in theater.
