When it comes to Major League Baseball in Texas, the Houston Astros have been the standard of late on the field.
While most of Texas leans toward the Astros or Rangers, El Paso is the only major city where those teams don’t dominate. Out of the 23 zip codes, only three of them had the highest share of ticket sales go to a Texas team; all Rangers, no Astros. The Arizona Diamondbacks, who are located more than 200 miles closer than either of the Texas stadiums, are favorites, claiming 12 zip codes. The Dodgers come in second with five.
The Diamondbacks’ popularity in El Paso should come as no surprise. While the city’s current Class AAA franchise, the Chihuahuas, is a San Diego affiliate, the affiliated baseball predecessor in El Paso, the Diablos, was an Arizona affiliate from 1999 to 2004, arguably the peak years of the Diamondbacks franchise.
