Through Abreu’s first 16 games as the Astros’ cleanup hitter, he is striking out at a career high rate and barreling balls at a career low rate . Most of the contact he produces is weak, the majority resulting in ground balls but also with more pop-ups than usual. Astros hitting coach Alex Cintrón said the main issue he’s identified is with the timing of Abreu’s swing. Opposing pitchers have recognized that Abreu’s timing is off and are responding by feeding him sliders and up-and-in fastballs.
“They told me that he usually starts off a slow starter in April, but when he gets it together, he keeps it together for a long time,” Baker said. “So we just got to be patient.”“I'm not worried about him,” Cintrón said. “I was watching some video today and he was hitting like .236 last year in May, around May 31. This guy hit .300 . So when he gets hot, it's crazy to see him hitting. And so I'm relaxing, just trying to figure out his timing.
