Monday night in Anaheim marked the second time in three games that Rafael Montero gave up...

Houston Astros relief pitcher Rafael Montero gives the ball to manager Dusty Baker as he is relieved against the Seattle Mariners during the eighth inning of a baseball game Saturday, May 6, 2023, in Seattle. ANAHEIM, Calif. — A year ago, Rafael Montero was a reliable setup man in a deep Astros relief corps.

There’s still plenty of time for a verdict to be rendered on that contract, but in the short term, Montero’s recent struggles have become something hard to ignore on the Astros’ current road trip. While Montero was the victim of some bad luck Saturday in Seattle — a pair of two-out infield dribblers turned into hits after a walk that extended the inning — the bottom line is he’s been scored on in all three of his May outings, allowing seven earned runs in 2 ⅔ innings. That’s seen his season ERA balloon from 2.25 to 6.14 in a little more than a week.
