Astros insider: Call for changeup bites Ryan Pressly in deflating defeat
Houston Astros Manager Dusty Baker heads to the batting cage during batting practice before a baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh, Tuesday, April 11, 2023. PITTSBURGH — The seventh loss ended with a four-letter expletive escaping a closer’s mouth, more frustration for a team that can’t stop creating it. Ji Hwan Bae’s bat met ball Tuesday night and produced Ryan Pressly’s profanity.
“We haven’t played our best baseball yet,” third baseman Alex Bregman said. “There’s been flashes of really good things, and there’s been some things we need to clean up as well. Definitely confident in this group coming together and playing really good team baseball moving forward. We didn’t play well enough tonight to win.”
“A lot of these games, we’ve had opportunities, especially late,” manager Dusty Baker said. “We’re one hit, one pitch away. We just have to keep plugging.” Bregman rolled over Bednar’s first-pitch fastball for the second out. Pittsburgh manager Derek Shelton intentionally walked Yordan Alvarez to allow José Abreu to bat. Three months ago, the scenario would have enticed anyone in the organization.
“Bregman was good,” Baker said. “Now we just have to get some of the other guys going. If you get one guy going, another guy falls off. We’ll get going here pretty soon.”
