Houston Astros pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. walks out of the clubhouse after announcing that he will be shut down for the next several weeks and would not be ready for the Astros’ season opener because of a muscle strain while at the Astros spring training complex at The Ballpark of the Palm Beaches on Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2023 in West Palm Beach .WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Both Michael Brantley and Lance McCullers Jr.

Both players will start the season on the injured list, but are scheduled to participate in the opening day festivities on Thursday at Minute Maid Park. Players will receive their World Series rings prior to Friday’s game against the White Sox, too. Manager Dusty Baker said Brantley will return to the team’s spring training complex in West Palm Beach after the four-game series against the White Sox to continue his ramp-up.

Baker acknowledged Brantley will “probably” need longer than the 10 days he’s required to stay on the injured list. The veteran outfielder has yet to face live pitching since undergoing shoulder surgery last August. A family emergency during camp set Brantley back in his rehab schedule. McCullers threw off flat ground on Saturday, but it’s unclear when he could progress to throwing off a mound. The righthander sustained a small muscle strain in his forearm during his first spring training bullpen session.
