PETALING JAYA: Retail associations have made several proposals for the government to bolster the retail sector, following dampened consumer demand due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Malaysia Retailers Association president James Loke and Malaysia Retailers Chain Association president Datuk Seri Garry Chua have called for the government to introduce a temporary measure to slash the Employees Provident Fund contribution for workers by 3% to put more cash in the hands of the rakyat.

The government, they added, could allow retail businesses to stop forking out levy payment to the Human Resources Development Fund to help those that are facing a slowdown in sales.“This includes measures to cope with the coronavirus outbreak, support businesses and its employees, address firms’ short-term cash flow needs, help sectors hit hardest by the epidemic and support families in coping with living costs.

They lauded the government’s efforts in managing the situation, adding that retailers will do their part in preventing the spread of the outbreak.
