Asian garment workers for global brands allege the financial turmoil caused by Covid-19 provides opportunity for bosses to target shop floors where unions press for higher wages and better conditions
In this picture taken on July 9, 2020, garment workers from the Euro Clothing Company II hold a protest in front of the factory, which was closed due to Covid-19, at Srirangapatna town in Karnataka state.
Gautam Mody, general-secretary of the New Trade Union Initiative, which represents hundreds of workers' groups across India, said the firm was "union-busting under the pretext of Covid" . Many factories have long resented the work of unions and have discouraged workers from collectivising while harassing or firing the most vocal leaders, campaigners say.
"It is illegal to dismiss workers because of their union affiliation or to close a factory because it is unionised," he said.
