Ashton Kutcher says he is 'lucky to be alive' after an experience with a rare disease that affected his ability to see, hear and walk.
In the episode, Grylls asks Kutcher where his strength comes from. Kutcher says:"Two years ago, I had this weird, super rare form of vasculitis that, like, knocked out my vision. It knocked out my hearing. It knocked out, like, all my equilibrium.
NBC News was unable to verify which type of vasculitis Kutcher had, and neither he nor Grylls could be reached for comment Monday.Mayo Clinic Merkel, who directs the Penn Vasculitis Center, said visual impairment from the disease can be a result of inflammation of the main artery going to the eye or inflammation of smaller blood vessels near the eye. Similarly, inflammation of the ear canal or nerve damage can cause hearing loss.
