Ash and Misty are a popular and enduring fan couple, but how many of the romantic hints in their relationship are present in the original Japanese?
For many fans of shipping, or pairing up fictional characters, the Pokémon anime was their first introduction to the concept, due to the complicated feelings Misty and Ash had for each other. While Ash and Misty remain a popular pairing, especially among older fans who started with the original series, the truth is that their relationship had a lot less romantic hints in Japanese.
That's not to say that Ash and Misty's potential romance was entirely a creation of the dub, of course. Misty does often get jealous when Ash receives attention from other girls, as in Pokémon the Movie 2000, when Melody asks Ash to dance. She also does blush when thinking about him, often lying about what she's thinking when pressed. Still, the idea of Ash and Misty together is pushed much harder by the dub than the original Japanese, although the reasons why are less clear.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Misty & Ash's Relationship Wasn't as Romantic in Japanese Pokémon the Movie 2000 actually makes for a perfect example. Melody is much nicer to Misty in Japanese, rather than behaving as if she's trying to steal Ash away. Melody's flirting is more overt in English, making her even more at odds with Misty.
The push for Ash and Misty extended beyond the show itself, too. The Pokémon 2.B.A. Master CD features a track called "Misty's Song," where Misty sings about her feelings towards Ash, ending with the lines "I want to tell you what I'm feeling, and to say that I love you." This was just the first of several such songs, and Misty's feelings for Ash would often come out in these American-produced music tracks.
