Asean needs to tackle physical, political cause of forest fires

A REAL way to minimise the risk of worsening transboundary smoke in the Asean region is to deal with the root physical and political causes of fires and haze. Universiti Malaya’s Department of International and Strategic Studies senior lecturer Helena Varkkey said Asean’s vision of a smoke-free region by 2020 is very much dependent on Indonesia’s political will to effectively handle the fires internally and accept assistance in a timely manner.
