PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will be meeting its regional neighbours to discuss the transboundary haze, especially as the El Nino phenomenon is expected to ­herald hotter and drier weather in the middle of the year.

“Malaysia will participate in talks with Brunei, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand over the issue of transboundary haze. The meeting, said Nik Nazmi, would be the 24th since the Asean Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution was inked in 2002.“Asean is also developing a new version of a roadmap on transboundary haze cooperation aimed at improving the existing one,” he said.

There were consistent Level 1 warnings for heatwaves in the districts of Jeli, Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah and Pasir Mas in Kelantan as well as Kubang Pasu and Padang Terap in Kedah.The nearby districts of Kota Baru and Bachok in Kelantan were also badly affected, leading to the death of a 11-year-old child.

“Compounds and legal action for open burning will be taken according to Section 29A of the Environmental Quality Act,” he said. He said the Environment Department had also activated its open burning prevention plan on March 29, particularly with regard to peatland fires.
