Many Dallas County inmates are stuck in the jail even though their legal cases should allow them to be transferred to other facilities. “While our organization would prefer not to have an increasing population, the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office will manage the population regardless of the count,” Carter said in a statement.
Dallas County last saw this large of a jail population in 2010, when commissioners considered leasing beds in Waco.Dallas County has a lot of “paper ready” inmates, who are taking space in county facilities while waiting for transfers to state facilities like hospitals or prisons, Wood said. According to the county’s December jail population report, 18% of inmates were waiting for transfer to state or federal agencies.
