With President Donald Trump already appearing to place his bets on facing Joe Biden in 2020, the former vice president’s fellow Democrats still have a long, long list of contenders to choose from before a nominee is crowned.
True, Biden is the clear front-runner in polls for the Democratic nomination, and he raised more money on his first day of campaigning than any of his rivals for his party’s nod.But Biden is one name on a sprawling roster of Democratic hopefuls that includes Sen. Bernie Sanders, South Bend, Ind., Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Montana Gov. Steve Bullock became the latest entry into the crowded field on Tuesday.
The goal for many is simply to get on the stage in June for the first of a dozen planned primary debates in the 2020 election cycle. Others hope to seize the front-runner mantle and ultimately, perhaps, a sense of inevitability. In a May 10 tweet, Trump said it looked to him like it’d be “SleepyCreepy Joe” Biden over “Crazy Bernie” Sanders.
