O'Rourke is 15th formally declared Democrat in 2020 presidential race
Beto O’Rourke on Thursday became the latest Democrat to announce he’s running for president, joining a field of those either running or considering a White House bid that’s nearly two dozen strong.
O’Rourke, a former Texas congressman, gained a national profile during his 2018 Senate race against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. O’Rourke narrowly lost but shattered fundraising records. The 46-year-old will compete against fellow Democrats including Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris. The goal for many is simply to get on the stage in June for the first of a dozen planned primary debates in the 2020 election cycle. Others hope to seize the front-runner mantle and ultimately, perhaps, a sense of inevitability.
But that is a ways down the road. The first voter verdicts will come on Feb. 3, 2020, with the Iowa caucuses.
