The Belarusian world No 2 beat Kamilla Rakhimova 6-2, 6-2 but in a closed interview said: ‘On Wednesday I did not feel safe in press conferences’
Aryna Sabalenka opted out of a post-match press conference after her third-round win over Kamilla Rakhimova on Friday following a number of tense exchanges with a Ukrainian reporter about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine after previous rounds here.
Sabalenka began by explaining that she did not feel safe after her second-round press conference and that she had decided not to attend on Friday for the sake of her mental health.“For many months now I have answered these questions at tournaments and been very clear in my feelings and my thoughts,” said Sabalenka, who is from Minsk, the capital of Belarus, an ally of Russia. “These questions do not bother me after my matches.
Sabalenka was later criticised by Kostyuk, who had been booed off Court Philippe Chatrier after not shaking Sabalenka’s hand.

Labor grants $5 million for new veterans’ support hub in DarwinThe Labor government has granted $5 million toward a new veterans’ wellbeing centre in Darwin, says Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Matt Keogh. “They’ll be offering supports in transition, in employment, in education and training, in advocacy services, in mental health and physical health,” Mr Keogh said during Question Time on Thursday. “But critically it will provide a place for people to come together, to share a brew, have a barbeque, form connection – to provide that peer support to each other as veterans in the community.”
