The government is considering developing an autonomous rail transit system for Kuala Lumpur, according to minister of economy Rafizi Ramli. This is apparently part of Putrajaya's efforts to spur public transport in Klang Valley, with the minister outlining several other plans to improve bus services, rail network, and integrated first and last mile connectivity
For one thing, the government plans on expanding the services of bus rapid transit and dedicated bus lanes. Moreover, the connectivity, coverage, frequency, and connectivity of bus services will be increased. As for first and last mile connectivity, bus stops and pedestrian walkways will be upgraded.
Trackless trams using the ART system are already being developed for use in Putrajaya, Sarawak, and Johor. In Sarawak's case, it is currently undergoing a proof-of-concept phase, with the first line expected to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2025. On the other hand, Johor is currently awaiting approval to replace its plans for a Light Rail Transit system for an ART system with 32 stations, with an operational timeline of January 2027. Meanwhile, Putrajaya is in the midst of running a free public trial of its trams, which has recently been extended to 31 August 2024.
