Biden arrives in Europe for G-7 and NATO summits as the world's leading democracies grapple with war in Ukraine as well as their own domestic issues.
Every time he has traveled abroad, President Biden has asserted an unwavering commitment to democratic values, eager to strengthen ties with allies and to frame confrontations with Russia and China as century-defining fights for freedom and human rights.Supreme Court’s decision Friday to end nearly five decades of a federally guaranteed right to an abortion in America.
As the first round of meetings of the Group of Seven got underway Sunday morning at Schloss Elmau, a historic chateau in the Bavarian Alps, Biden emphasized that the world’s leading democracies would remain unified in support of Ukraine,in a new effort to deny Moscow an economic lifeline amid ongoing sanctions from the West.
The G-7 leaders mocked Putin as they posed for a photo at the start of a meeting. As he sat down at a round table, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked the others about whether to keep his suit jacket on. “We have to show we’re tougher than Putin,” Johnson joked. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau joked back: “Bare chested horseback ride,” referencing a photo of the Russian leader photo from years ago.
But back home, the rollback of abortion rights continued to dominate the news, overshadowing Biden’s high-stakes diplomacy. And the growing domestic unease, including from progressives demanding that Biden and Democrats fight harder to preserve abortion rights, only added to the doubts of the president’s G-7 counterparts about the stability of his presidency and American democracy more broadly.
