I would like to devote this article on the essence of the speech I delivered on behalf of Sabah Economic Advisory Council to the Sabah Chinese Economic Conference on 23 August 2023. The speech consists 4 parts. Part 1-Why re-create Sabah--The past. Part 2- Hajiji’s -creation of Sabah. Part 3.- Solutions for major infrastructure problems. Part 4- Hajiji’s New Sabah. Exciting opportunities Most points in my speech are public facts and can be verified in the press and google. Part 1-Why re-create Sabah-The past. Soonest Hajiji was sworn in as CM, he was confronted with many serious problems. Some of which are: [a] Sabah has been in an economic doldrum since the mid-1980s [almost 40 years]. We were the No. 2 state in Malaysia, only behind Selangor, but has since sunk to the bottom position. Economic growth has been stunted with the lowest household income and highest rate of unemployment. Thousands of young Sabahans have migrated to W Malaysia and Singapore to seek jobs and better pay.

[e] Hajiji was constantly preoccupied with political instability and lopsided Federal/Sabah relationship.In the short time in office, Hajiji has established the economic architecture for the transformation of the Sabah economy. Some of his flagship initiatives are:[b] He assured Sabahans that he would be the Chief Minister for all Sabahans.[d] A very important departure from tradition, one of his earliest tasks was to form the Sabah Economic Advisory Council which is a non-political body.
This has paved the way for sustainable economic development and reset an equitable equilibrium relationship between the Federal Government and Sabah Government. Sabah Energy Commission has been formed and Sabah will take over management of SESB on 1 January 2024. He has also announced that the RM4 billion Tenom Dam with daily capacity of 6 million litres will be launched in October. Completion will be in 2027.To lower long term logistic cost for business, a statewide railway system is being looked into. The priorities are to construct railway for [a] KKIP to Sepangar Port]. [b] East Coast Railway linking Sandakan, Lahad Datu [POIC] and Tawau.
