Three Tempe, Arizona, police officers have been placed on non-disciplinary paid administrative leave after they refused to jump into a lake to help 34-year-old Sean Bickings, who went into the water after being questioned by police.

TEMPE, Arizona — The actions of three police officers are under scrutiny after they refused to jump into a lake to help a man who called for assistance after going into the water to evade the officers, but eventually drowned.

The officers said they were going to run both of their names through computer records to see if they had outstanding warrants. Bickings then reportedly climbed over a 4-foot metal fence and entered the water at Tempe Town Lake. According to AZCentral, an officer said, “No, you’re not.” Bickings was told to swim to a pylon and hold on to it, but Bickings said that he couldn’t make it.the transcript shows Bickings’ wife begged the officers to help her husband. The officers reportedly told her to calm down, threatening to put her in a patrol car.

City Manager Andrew Ching and Police Chief Jeff Glover released a statement, calling Bickings’ death a tragedy, AZCentral reports. The Tempe Officers Association says the officers were not properly equipped to safely help Bickings.
