‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret’ Director Kelly Fremon Craig on Bringing Menstruation to the Movies

'I really didn't want it to be too neat and tidy. My own adolescence was a mess and I was a mess,' says the director of her adaptation of the beloved Judy Blume book, out via Lionsgate.

Like many, director Kelly Fremon Craig first read the book when she was in the throes of adolescence. “I was such an awkward and uncertain kid,” she says, in a phone call with. “There was something about reading about a character that was going through all the things that I was going through that just was so reassuring to me.

In Hollywood, it’s common to see 20-year-olds playing 15-year-olds. How important was it to cast kids that were the actual ages of these characters? The film lovingly and hilariously portrays what it is to prepare for and to get your first period, which is rarely seen onscreen. What was it like producing that behind the scenes?
