.IChotiner speaks with a former Trump loyalist about how Republicans have tried to take both sides of election denialism—and why the Party always ends up returning to the former President.
. Those two things have really caused many Republicans to say that they have had enough of former President Trump. I think if he would come out and say, “Look, 2020 is over—I lost, but I’m going to come back in 2024 and run and put my same agenda in place,” he probably would win some additional support back.
Well, it’s probably one of the problems with former President Trump. His loyalty doesn’t go two ways. I’ve seen that too often.Yeah, I did not realize that his loyalty is really one way. And so I don’t know. I was in constant contact with former President Trump during the Ohio primary. He was always saying that he appreciated all that I’d done. He was a big supporter of mine.
Is there anything he could do to get your support in the primary, or is it more that you’re just going to follow his campaign, follow his issue positions? Well, I do. But, as I said, I have qualms that could be changed with him coming out and just saying, “This isn’t about me. This isn’t about the 2020 election anymore. This isn’t about January 6th. This is about me getting back and changing the country and representing the people.” Do I think there were problems in the 2020 election? Yes, I do. But I also believe in the Constitution, and I believe that the Constitution tells us that once the House and the Senate vote, the election’s over.
Well, remember, everybody in their life has issues. My response after that was, you could go back and find somebody who has said something or done something, but still has strong character values now. That was my position there. But that clearly is different when you look at now, when you get past that and you’re seeing somebody who still wants to say the 2020 election was stolen from him.Yeah. He even said Ohio.
