Opinion from Laurie Roberts: Arizona Public Service spent $250,000 trying to cozy up to Gov. Katie Hobbs. Here's what she should do with that money.
Money that came from profits the utility scored from its captive customers.
And asking for a $460 million rate hike, one that would boost customers’ bills by an average of $18 a month.Hobbs has no vote in such matters . The utility’s plea for more cash will be decided by the Republican-dominated Arizona Corporation Commission. So let’s review. Hobbs collected $1.5 million to pay for an inauguration that cost $207,000. Meanwhile, a separate State Inaugural Fund collected $85,000 to pay for the inauguration.
Me? I’m thinking money that ultimately came from APS’s customers – people who had no choice but to fork over the dough given the utility’s monopoly status – should not be used for political purposes.
