Just yesterday, Jalan Masjid India was closed off to all vehicles for safety reasons after another part of the road’s walkway had sunken in, just 50 meters from the first sinkhole where a woman had fallen in. Now, it appears that further action is being taken to prevent any further casualties.
According to a report by Astro Awani, all approvals for new development projects in Kuala Lumpur have been temporarily suspended. The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department , Dr Zaliha Mustafa, shared that the suspension was made so that the task force for disasters, including for sinkholes, can be established first. She also explained that her department is currently working to strengthen the SOPs of developments in Kuala Lumpur.
“We have put the projects on hold for the time being, while we establish the task force. We will take into account geotechnical studies. Although previous studies have already been conducted in slopy areas, God willing, in the future, we may see the need to do research in flat areas,” “With unpredictable weather conditions, too much rain has caused the soil structure to become loose and soft, which can cause undesirable conditions. So, God willing, we will refine and strengthen the SOPs,” she said.
