9to5Mac reports that the Apple will be launching the M5 chip alongside the refresh of the MacBook Pro and iPad Pro this autumn.
Last year, Apple sort of broke tradition by introducing the then new M4 chip with the iPad Pro, ahead of the usual MacBook Pro. This year, the bitten fruit brand may be looking to introduce the chip to the world with both its Pro tier notebooks and tablets simultaneously. Or at least so reports 9to5Mac.
The report notes that, just a little bit more specifically, the release of the new M5-equipped hardware will be launching between October and November. The iPad Pro line may be an exception as it's possible that Apple may decide to launch them alongside the iPhones of the year. Other Mac models will be getting their turn at the M5 chip next year instead.
Circling back to the iPad Pro laptops, these are claimed to be coming in at least three configurations corresponding to the three variants of the chip. These are the base M5, the M5 Pro and the M5 Max, with more memory and storage configurations between them. The MacBook Pro laptops themselves are noted to only have incremental upgrades. It won't be until next year when the M6 models get announced that the notebooks get a hardware redesign, as well as OLED screens, among other changes.
Similarly, the iPad Pro models with the M5 chips are also noted to be mostly a spec bump, though it's unclear what else is getting updated beyond the chipset. The report also notes that iPadOS 26 will be featured heavily for the tablets' launch, and perhaps the bitten fruit brand will make more clear what is stopping the iPad Pro with accessories from becoming Macs with touchscreens.
