Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim suggests a mandatory donation program for Universiti Malaya alumni, including ministers, to support the university's funding. He proposes a donation of RM10,000 for Cabinet members and RM1,000 for alumni earning above RM10,000 per month. He aims to alleviate the government's financial burden in funding UM development.

Prime Minister, Dato Seri Anwar Ibrahim , has suggested making it mandatory for Universiti Malaya alumni, including ministers, to donate to the educational institute to ease the burden of the government in providing them with funding. According to a report by Kosmo, he said this during the recent UM Alumni Night 2024, stating his belief that ministers who are alumni should each contribute RM10,000 to the Universiti Malaya Endowment Fund (UMEF).

Additionally, he shared that other alumni whose income exceeds RM10,000 per month should also donate. “Starting with Cabinet members who are UM alumni, we will start with a mandatory amount of RM10,000 each. I believe that the university graduates whose income exceeds RM10,000 should also contribute RM1,000 to UMEF,” he said. Anwar believes that the funds collected this way can exceed half a billion Ringgit, should all parties cooperate. “We do not want to burden the government with more funding (for UM development) and I do not want to give up as the government,” “But, we all know that we have constraints and (we have) inherited an economic situation that was managed irresponsibly, our country is more famous for its governance and corruption to a point where the (national) debt burden at that time had reached RM1.5 trillion,” he added.
