Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim assures that the issues concerning gas distribution rights in Sarawak between Petronas and Petros have been settled through negotiations. He clarifies that the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016 does not override federal laws and Petronas's position remains intact.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed confidence that the issues surrounding Petronas and Petros regarding gas distribution rights in Sarawak have been resolved through several rounds of negotiations, including a meeting he had with Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Anwar stated that there were no ambiguities in fundamental matters that needed to be scrutinized, as the Petroleum Development Act 1974 applied to the entire country and this was accepted by both the Sarawak government and Petros. He emphasized that the federal government acknowledges the establishment of Petros, which provides Sarawak with an opportunity to explore hydrocarbon exploration and gas distribution within Sarawak. Anwar clarified that the Sarawak Gas Distribution Ordinance 2016 would not supersede the Petroleum Development Act 1974, the Constitution of Malaysia, or other federal laws, therefore, Petronas's position remains unaffected. He stressed that the federal government operates within the framework of the laws and constitution of Malaysia, ensuring a balanced approach to resource management.Prior to this, Anwar arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday for a three-day working visit to attend the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) and enhance bilateral relations in various sectors between the two nations. This marked Anwar's second visit to the UAE since October 2023 and his first overseas trip since Malaysia assumed the chairmanship of ASEAN 2025
