As the first night of Hanukkah arrived Sunday, a surge of antisemitic incidents have left many Jews feeling vulnerable and even frightened.

Guila Franklin Siegel had already been planning to talk with seventh and eighth graders about antisemitism on Sunday morning at Adat Shalom Reconstructionist Congregation in Bethesda. Then she heard about the incident at Walt Whitman, and the lesson took on added urgency.The conversation, she said, “was very much focused on positive energy,” said Franklin Siegel, associate director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Greater Washington.
Greg Harris, senior rabbi at Congregation Beth El in Bethesda, said in this difficult moment, his message to the community centers on “bringing light into the darkness.”
