ANTIOCH — Emotions boiled over across this city following the release of a report detailing years of racist and homophobic text messages by more than a dozen police officers, as the mayor angrily decried “dog-whistle racism” and defense attorneys moved to challenge criminal cases involving the officers.
“That is a dog whistle, dog-whistle racism, an apologist for what’s absolutely wrong with this city,” he yelled. “You want to go outside? I am sick and tired of being attacked by these people in this community apologizing for the racism that is going on in this community.” The messages were discovered amid an ongoing FBI and DA’s criminal investigation of more than a dozen current and former Antioch and Pittsburg police officers. Already, dozens of criminal cases involving implicated officers have been dismissed and in Martinez on Wednesday, defense attorneys began airing plans in open court to seek the dismissal of many more.
The Contra Costa County public defender’s office has said thousands of cases will be impacted by the texts.
