Firefighters, police and city staff were working to rescue a man trapped Sunday evening in a storm drain, authorities said.

According to Contra Costa County Fire Protection District social-media posts, about fifty people with the district joined Antioch police, East Contra Costa fire district firefighters and Antioch city staff at a drain in the 3100 block of Buchanan Road to coordinate efforts on behalf of the man, who was responsive and talking with rescuers.

Residents were asked to avoid the area to ease responder access. Firefighters responded to reports of the incident shortly after 5:35 p.m. for reports of a confined-space rescue.Check back for updates. Con Fire is on scene a confined space rescue involving a male subject trapped in a storm drain about 15 ft underground in 3100 block of Buchanan, Antioch. Man is responsive & communicating with rescue personnel. Please avoid area to allow first responders access.
