Thousands of people are expected to take part in an anti-corruption rally in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, demanding greater transparency and accountability from the government.
An anti-corruption rally titled “Himpunan Rakyat Benci Rasuah” is scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon at 2:30 pm. Starting in front of the Sogo KL shopping mall, the rally will march to the historic Dataran Merdeka. Participants are instructed to wear black attire. Dozens of protesters have already gathered in front of the Sogo shopping mall, all dressed in black. A single police car is stationed nearby, monitoring the event.
The main entrance of Sogo has been cordoned off with barricades and red tape, and a sign prohibiting sitting, gathering, or carrying out any activities in the area is prominently displayed. The protest aims to shed light on alleged corruption within the country, particularly among the younger generation. It appears to be a continuation of public criticism directed at cases involving Sabah politicians, including the recent appointment of Tun Musa Aman as governor and an alleged scandal involving top state government officials there. The group also expresses concern regarding the current administration’s purported stance on corruption, citing recent court acquittals involving Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.The Sekretariat Rakyat Benci Rasuah (SRBR), a loose coalition endorsed by 50 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and activist movements spearheaded by university students, organized the rally. The group maintains a staunchly politically neutral stance and has warned political parties against exploiting its cause. Despite this, the rally has received support from the youth wings of PKR, PAS, and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia. However, these political groups have been advised against bringing materials bearing their logos to the event.Inspector General of Police, Tan Sri Razarudin Hassan, has confirmed that the police will facilitate the smooth operation of the rally. He stated that this aligns with the government's commitment to upholding the right to freedom of assembly as guaranteed by the Federal Constitution. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has also expressed his non-objection to the rally but condemned attempts to link him to alleged scandals of previous administrations. Prior to Anwar’s statement, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil emphasized that organizers were required to obtain a permit from the Kuala Lumpur City Hall, the owner of the Dataran, in accordance with the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA).
