Transport Minister Anthony Loke addresses public concerns regarding his previous opposition to AES cameras and his current support for AWAS. He clarifies the reasons behind his stance, highlighting the difference between the previous private-run system and the current government-operated AWAS, which focuses on road safety rather than profit.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook recently addressed public criticisms and concerns through his official social media channels. One of the key issues tackled was his previous opposition to the Automated Enforcement System (AES) cameras, which has since been upgraded to the Automated Awareness Safety System ( AWAS ). Loke explained his stance, revealing that he objected to the original AES model because it was implemented by a private company that profited from every summons issued.
Under that agreement, the private company received up to 50% of the revenue collected from fines. Loke stated that he viewed this as a problematic system where the private company had a financial incentive to issue more summonses, treating traffic enforcement as a business rather than a public safety measure. When his government came into power in 2018, he immediately cancelled 4 million outstanding AES summonses and announced that the government would take over the cameras, enforcing traffic laws through the Road Transport Department (JPJ).The minister emphasized that AWAS was designed to improve road safety, not to generate profit. He argued that a significant number of road accidents in Malaysia are caused by drivers losing control of their vehicles, making speed reduction a crucial factor in preventing accidents. Loke stressed the importance of considering the safety of oneself, family, and other road users, highlighting the government's responsibility to ensure safe roads. While acknowledging criticism regarding AWAS enforcement, Loke asserted that decisive action was necessary to address the issue and save lives on Malaysian roads.
