The Minister of Transport, Anthony Loke, vehemently denied the Road Transport Department's claim that it was given a key performance indicator to issue 13,000 traffic summonses during the Aidilfitri festival season. So, what should you know about it?

"First of all, I would like to advise people not to believe fake news, especially the things that go viral on social media are not all true... check the facts first. Our principle is to reduce accidents. Our KPI is to reduce road accidents, instead of issuing summonses... there is no KPI issuing summonses. That's what I want to emphasize, there is no KPI from the Ministry of Transport to JPJ to issue how many summonses. That's a false KPI…that's a false statement.

"Our KPI is to keep people safe, not how many summonses are issued. So that's not true...people don't believe it. JPJ's job is to ensure public safety. The operation is there, the operation is to see whether everyone complies with the law or not. It is not an operation to issue a summons. But if they are wrong, a summons will be issued,"

A message that went viral via WhatsApp recently claimed that JPJ had set a KPI target of issuing 13,000 summonses from April 1 to 20 and that 1,500 vehicles would be impounded during that period. However, what is certain is that JPJ has already started a special operation for the period from 1 to 20 April, with the usual enforcement of traffic offences such as not wearing a seat belt, cutting on double lines, cutting lines and using a mobile phone while operating a vehicle. If you are on the road, drive carefully and obey all traffic rules.
