President Joe Biden released a statement Thursday on the mass shooting in Lewiston that left 18 people dead and 13 injured.

Police say a massive search is underway for the suspected shooter, 40-year-old Robert Card of Bowdoin. In his statement Thursday afternoon, Biden said he and the First Lady were praying for those who lost their lives or were injured.Also read:The President said he had spoken to Governor Janet Mills, as well as Senators Susan Collins and Angus King and Representative Jared Golden.

Biden says while his administration has made progress on gun safety, he urges Republican lawmakers to work with Democrats to ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and enact universal background checks.Maine State Police also has two numbers people can call with tips: 213-9526 or 509-9002.
