Exclusive: Andy Samberg revealed his hope of breaking free from impressions forever as he adapts his Nic Cage-esque voice for the new Comedy Central show Digman

Andy Samberg hopes that his new Comedy Central series Digman! will help him separate his iconic Nicolas Cage SNL impersonation from Cage himself. Digman! was co-created by Samberg and Neil Campbell; the pair previously collaborated for years on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, on which Campbell was a writer and producer.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Upon first look, it’s easy to classify Digman! as Nicolas Cage-meets-Indiana Jones, or more succinctly as a riff on the National Treasure film franchise. However, while the voice Samberg employs as the series’ lead character Rip Digman is certainly mined from his days impersonating Cage on SNL, the actor chose the voice in large part to give it a life outside of impersonation.

We had talked about how it would be fun for me to be able to do a character that was sort of based on that so that I wasn't spending my whole life doing an impression of another person, especially because he had come on SNL and done it with me.

When he came on SNL, he even said a thing which actually was very astute, which was that I'm not actually playing him. I'm actually playing a psychotic character that me and my friend Rob Klein came up with. That was almost a lightbulb moment of, like, "Right, I want to keep playing that character; I don't want to keep just doing an impression." There's definitely some intermingling, just the way the voice sounds, obviously.

Truth be told, it doesn't take long for Rip Digman to stand apart from Andy Samberg's Nic Cage. Samberg, Campbell, and the rest of the writing team have created a character who is surprisingly easy to sympathize with despite being "psychotic", as Samberg described above. This is especially good news for the longevity of Digman!, since it's unlikely a show will effectively run for multiple seasons based on a single joke premise.
