Tony Gilroy walks through the secrets of “Rix Road,” the finale that helped earn the show many of its eight Emmy nominations.
“Rix Road” was the culmination of the season. You’ve got a funeral, you’ve got Cassian’s Rebel allies trying to kill him. You’ve got the Empire also trying to catch him. A lot of threads come together. What was the key to balancing it all?I don’t think in the very beginning I was aware of how many characters I was going to put into play, or how complicated we were going to make it for ourselves. But once you get them up and running, you want to have everybody colliding at the end.
The mental build of Ferrix was a two-year project. It started with cocktail-napkin drawings I sent tothe production designer. My cretinous drawings are all over the place. One really early thing for me was the Grapplers Hall. There’s a spot on the wall where your father or your brother hung their gloves. Suddenly the place is taking on a sense of community that feels righteous. So you start there.
Nobody wears a watch. They have these eight times of day that all mean something. It’s like, wow, this place is getting very ethnographically articulate, you know? How many different people work here? What kind of salvage yards are here? How does it all work? And suddenly you’re just literally world-building.
I realized we needed to do the funeral, and the idea of the Daughters of Ferrix came up. We knew in a town like this, there'd be all kinds of civic organizations. This one’s like the Daughters of American Revolution or something. Maarva would be a past president. With Fiona Shaw, you get the sense she’s a noted citizen.
