This most recent discovery, made May 6 by a team from China’s Institute of Karst Geology, brings the total number of sinkholes found in China’s Guangxi region to 30. Sinkholes are created by rainwater runoff that gets into cracks and crevices in the ground. Over time, the water creates underground tunnels that, when big enough, cause a collapse, said George Veni, executive director of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute in the U.S., in anSinkholes and caves can house fresh groundwater and often make hospitable environments for plant life, Veni told Live Science.
