The Anchorage Assembly confirmed Sean Case as the newly appointed APD police chief and made a decision on how long authorities might have to release body-worn camera footage.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Anchorage Assembly passed a substitute version of a resolution in a 9-1 vote on Tuesday night that proposes specific changes to the Anchorage Police Department’s current body-worn camera policy.
“I think that this is an opportunity that we haven’t seen for a little while,” Case said. “We have a mayor, an Assembly and police chief who have a united vision for what the police department looks like, and the way we’re going to communicate with the public, and the way we’re going to interact with the public.”
“The plan is the policy is going to remain as it is currently until the work session on Friday,” Case said. “The work session gives us the opportunity to have a productive conversation.” The release of body-worn camera recordings of all recent officer-involved shootings is to happen no later than 30 days after the resolution’s approval.
“There may be legitimate reasons why APD may not choose to release footage, but we need to know a couple of things,” Zaletel said. “One is time, certain when the next decision will be made. If it’s not going to be released on this day, when will we hear again when it might be released? And if there’s an update, and that needs to keep happening.”
“We talk about transparency and accountability, but I think sometimes, there can be some tension between these,” Johnson said. “The sooner we get the footage out there available to the public, like, yes, that does favor transparency, but I think that can come at a cost to accountability.”
