Between 1880 and 1968, over four thousand African American people were lynched in the United States, according to multiple independent investigations.
As if that weren’t shocking enough, white people who attended these public murders often shared souvenirs of the occasion, a phenomenon documented in the Oscar shortlisted film. The short from MTV Documentary Films, directed by Christine Turner, is streaming on the Paramount+ platform. In the exclusive anatomy of a scene video above, the director explains, “I had come across a number of these postcards and souvenirs while working on other documentary projects. But I really felt like they had been under-explored on film, that they weren’t something that the general public was very familiar with.”
“’Taken from death,’ lynching at Russellville, Logan County, Kentucky, July 31, 1908,” reads an explanatory caption on one of the faded postcards. The Black man in the photo, “hanged on the old Proctor Lynching Tree,” is not identified.
