Many Malaysians feel that Muhyiddin’s administration – supported by its health department – has done a good job in battling Covid-19.

The country’s political temperature was raised recently after Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof allowed a motion by former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to table a motion on a no-confidence vote against Muhyiddin.

As Parliament will reconvene on July 13, this motion can still be moved. It will serve to remind people to question if Muhyiddin commands majority support in the Lower House of Parliament. Although there are constant political agitations from Mahathir and his loyalists, Muhyiddin has set about winning over support from a number of MPs not aligned with him previously.

Recently, Simpang Rengam MP Maszlee Malik was extended an offer to lead bumiputra agency Mara following the removal of the entire board appointed by the former government. With the country now battling furiously against the lethal Covid-19 pandemic and struggling to restart the virus-beaten economy, the last thing most people want is to plunge into more potential chaos.

“What we need now is political stability, no corruption, proper execution of the Perihatin stimulus packages for businesses and careful planning of our economy. “The government’s overriding priorities now are to battle the Covid-19 pandemic and navigate the economy, people and businesses out of this deep economic crisis. All parties should be in solidarity to help the revitalisation of the economy,” he tells Sunday Star.

After becoming premier for just over two weeks, he made a decisive move to impose the MCO on March 16, five days after the World Health Organisation declared the global Covid-19 outbreak a pandemic.
