Arab Americans are not new to this nation.
Mireille Rebeiz, Associate Professor at Dickinson CollegeAs your constituent, I am writing this letter to urge you to recognize the month of April as the Arab American Heritage Month.
Arab Americans are not new to this nation, and our migration story goes back to the 1800s when Arabs – mostly Christians – left countries like Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, and Palestine to escape the oppression of the Ottoman Empire. Our community settled in the United States and made it home for centuries. We shared our traditions, customs, faiths, and food recipes – especially hummus! And we fully integrated all aspects of American lifestyle and society.
Along the way, we encountered bigotry and racist migration policies such as the Naturalization Act of 1790 which limited U.S citizenship to white immigrants and forced generations of Arab Americans to identify as white, the Johnson-Reed Immigration Act of 1924 that considered Asian countries like Lebanon and Syria racially inferior and therefore unworthy of admission, and the Muslim Ban of 2017.
Today, we face legal invisibility on daily basis since the U.S. census does not recognize our existence nor our ethnicity, which deprives us of serious legal protection.Despite it all, we persevere and fully participate in the greatness of this country. Names like Ralph Nader, Danny Thomas, Michael E. DeBakey, Gibran Khalil Gibran, Rami Malek, Steve Jobs, Tony Shalhoub, Sara Minkara among many many others are known to all for their contributions to different fields.
