A new song cycle from Lior, Nigel Westlake and Dr Lou Bennett pays tribute to Yorta Yorta elder William Cooper and his 1938 march

ne morning in December 1938, Yorta Yorta elder William Cooper led a group of Australian First Nations activists, the Australian Aborigines’ League, on a two-hour march from Footscray to the German consulate on Collins Street.

“Our people have suffered much cruelty, exploitation and misunderstanding as a minority at the hands of another people,” their resolution read. “The Nazi government has a consulate here on our land. Let us go there and make our protest known.” When he heard the story 75 years later, the Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Lior was “just completely blown away”. At the time, he and composer Nigel Westlake were contemplating a companion piece to their 2013 song cycle Compassion. Drawing from ancient Hebrew and Arabic texts, the project was a sweeping orchestral meditation on peace and cross-cultural understanding. As they looked to create a follow-up, Lior began searching for a story that embodied those themes “in the real world”.

Timing of speculation around lab leak theory ‘interesting’Timing of speculation around lab leak theory ‘interesting’The timing of recent speculation around the COVID-19 lab leak theory is very “interesting” as the matter is adding extra pressure on China, among other things, says ANU Strategic and Defence Studies Centre’s Professor John Blaxland. FBI Director Christopher Wray has told Fox News the virus “most likely” came from a lab in Wuhan. “This is at the time when the United States is also pressuring China over the 12-point peace plan and the prospect of China … directly supporting the Russians militarily,” Professor Blaxland told Sky News Australia. 'And there’s rumours circulating of China being prepared to backfill Russian equipment in eastern Russia to enable the Russians to relocate some of their equipment to bolster their capabilities in the war in Ukraine. “It’s not exactly clear that there’s a correlation … but certainly it is interesting the timing, that this is now adding extra pressure on China, this is coming on top of significant trade streams.”
