With Donald Trump becoming the first president in American history to have been criminally convicted, the Canadian government will have to manage the potential of a felon returning to power, as one expert warns that Canada will have to confront a weakening democracy south of the border. “I think Canada needs to be thinking not just how we’re going to deal with a Trump presidency if that happens, but also study how partisan polarization and right-wing extremism the rule of law in the U.S., and thinking about what is it that is preventing those same processes from making inroads here.” He said he has been disappointed with how quiet Canada has been about issues of the American democratic backsliding, especially during the last Trump presidency.
