But as the district continued to narrow its options, it became clearer to LaFayette residents that their offer for a school located in the county seat would not be chosen.

Like many others in LaFayette, Ellis said he would favor consolidation if it truly meant more opportunities for local students. But he didn’t want progress to come at the expense of his city, which had struggled for years to attract and retain businesses and homeowners.“We’re just hoping that we put ourselves in a position to give them the land,” he said. “Hopefully what we’ve done is going to be enough.
